About the image

A storm system was moving through the area, and I suggested to the senior girl and her parents, that if we’re not afraid of getting drenched, we might experience some spectacular skies. And that could add some drama to the portrait (and to our lives that day!). A deserted section of highway provided an appropriate platform for the girl to dance, while giving a wide view of the western horizon. The lighting was simply a single strobe with para-reflector (i.e. hard light). This allowed for the power to be lowered, resulting in short flash duration. The strobe was placed 20 ft away so the light level on the girl would remain fairly constant in spite of her moving about. The BTS image shows the initial lighting coverage of the strobe. It was afterwards tilted up to feather the light away from the asphalt.
