About the image

For a while now I’ve wanted a striking portrait of my dad. He came for a visit and I checked the box. I wanted to show the details of his skin and cheek bones, so I used a gridded beauty dish up close. I used a fill light behind the camera to fill in shadows that went too harsh. I hit the edge of his hair and shoulder from behind and to the right with a bare bulb in a reflector dish with a grid on it to separate him from the dark background and show small details.
