How I got the shot…
For this set, we used the Westcott X-Drop Pro backdrop system with an 8’ x 13’ black backdrop. For the flooring we used the cheer mats that were already in the gym.
Four lights total were used. Two Westcott FJ400s, serving as rim lights, were each modified with a MagMod MagBox Pro 36 Strip Box, and placed on each side of the backdrop at a 45° angle towards the front of the floor drop. A third FJ400, modified with the MagMod XL reflector and a green Dome Gel, was placed directly in front of the backdrop. The main light, also an FJ400, was modified with a MagMod MagBox Pro 42” Octa and was placed camera left.
Atmosphere Aerosol was generously sprayed in front of the three lights along the width of the backdrop. The fog helps set the mood and adds texture to the background.
Having an iPad tethered to the Canon EOS R5 really helps with sessions like this one. Gianna was able to easily review the shots taken, so as to decide if a sequence needed to be shot again.
While I always strive to get as much as I can in-camera so that the resulting shots are as close to “finished” as possible, I did have to do a little more in post production here in regards to the flooring. I replaced the cheer mats with an AI generated floor using Photoshop’s new Generative Fill feature. This last bit really gave the final images a polished look as if they were shot on a green gym floor.
