About the image

To capture this high school senior interested in metal work (welding, grinding, etc.), I set up a 3 light configuration. The main light, a Flashpoint AD600 with a 42″ softbox, was positioned to the right of the camera. This light served as the primary source of illumination. For added depth and drama, I used two kicker lights. The first kicker light, a bare bulb Flashpoint AD200 with a MagMod blue gel, was placed to the left and behind the subject. Its purpose was to create a complementary accent and separation. The second kicker light, another Flashpoint AD200 equipped with a MagMod Full CTO gel and MagSphere, was strategically positioned just outside a roll-up garage door. This light was used to mimic the sun’s warm glow and enhance the overall ambiance of the scene. To ensure safety and protect my equipment, I photographed the subject from a low angle and behind a clear piece of glass. This setup not only shielded the camera, lens, and myself from the sparks but also added an interesting visual element to the composition.
